Tricks

Par Christophe Carrière

It's a gulp of oxygen for this week, the ray of sunlight for the month and the Polish movie of the year, carried by its harvest of prizes awarded at a multitude of film festivals all over the world. And oh! weren't the festival-goers surprised: a story situated in a godforsaken region and with a cast of unknown actors and amateurs. They were expecting a depressing purgatory, full of greyness and crestfallen faces... only to find themselves facing something totally different: a wide screen full of sunshine and filled with entertaining characters, who have as a leader a kid trying to find his father. So what if the father is this penpusher that catches his train every morning at the local railway station? Doubt quickly gives way to certainty and the child elaborates strategies which ensnare the man to see his mother. In the meantime, we can observe beautifully poetic flights of doves and humorous demonstrations of the ineluctability of fate. In fact the first title of this movie was Destins animés. The French distributor, inspired, changed it to "A midsummer Polish fable" (Un conte d'été polonais).which matches perfectly.
Tricks, directed by Andrzej Jakimowski, starring: Damian Ul, Ewelina Walendziak, Rafal Guzniczak...
RATING: GOOD
